Knife Engraving Proof: Wording & Placement Checklist

Prepare the wording before choosing a layout
An engraving request has two separate decisions: what the text should say and how it should appear on the selected piece. Settle the wording first. A short, approved message gives the maker a concrete starting point; a list of possible phrases creates uncertainty about which version belongs on the order.
Use a real product reference
Start with the American Flag Handle Damascus Chef Knife or another item in the kitchen collection. Ask whether your proposed personalisation is suitable for that exact design. A decorative handle or patterned blade is a visual reference, not a guarantee that every position or text length can be accommodated.
Write a character-perfect text line
Copy the final wording into one clearly labelled line. Check names, initials, punctuation, capital letters and date format. For a date, spell out the month when a numerical version could be read in two ways. Mark quotation marks as part of the message only if you actually want them included. Have the intended approver check this line before discussing the design.
Ask for the placement to be identified
Describe your preferred position and orientation, then ask the team to confirm what is feasible. Request a labelled image or layout reference if available. Specify which side you mean using a photograph rather than phrases such as the front. If the order contains several knives, identify each piece and its text separately.
Review the proof as one complete instruction
Review the spelling, line breaks, orientation and proposed location together. A text approval should not silently become approval for a different placement. If you request a revision, label the replacement clearly and say which earlier version it supersedes. Ask the team to acknowledge the final version before production; do not assume a proof service or a particular production deadline without confirmation.
Keep the commercial details alongside the approval
Confirm the personalisation charge, quantity, included accessories and timing in the quotation. Read the returns policy and ask how it applies to the proposed personalised item before ordering. This guide does not promise a particular price, engraving method or delivery date.
