Kitchen Knife Handover: Build a Care Information Card

Keep instructions with the actual knife

An everyday cleaning routine and a handover record serve different purposes. A care information card preserves the instructions for one particular product when it moves to a new owner or a shared kitchen. It should identify the knife, rather than offer a universal treatment for every blade.

Record the product identity

Start with the Sharpcraft product name, order reference and a photograph. For a set, label the pieces so a later question can point to the correct knife. Keep the confirmed material description supplied with the order; do not infer a steel grade from the pattern in a gallery.

Request instructions in useful categories

Ask the maker for cleaning, drying, storage and maintenance instructions for the exact blade, handle and supplied accessories. Request clarification about any recommended product or treatment before using it. Leave unanswered fields marked “awaiting maker guidance” instead of filling them with generic advice.

Document covers and storage separately

If the order includes a roll bag or individual covers, record which piece belongs in which position. Ask for the care and storage guidance for those accessories as well as the knives. A bag shown in a photograph does not establish its material or maintenance requirements.

Make the card easy to update

Include a dated instruction version and a place for later confirmed guidance. Keep the card accessible to the person using the product. If an instruction is unclear, send the product reference and the precise question to the supplier rather than relying on a different knife’s instructions.

Use this handover template

Record: product reference; photograph; confirmed blade and handle materials; maker’s cleaning guidance; drying guidance; storage guidance; maintenance guidance; included accessories; date confirmed; outstanding questions. For a gift, include these confirmed details with the product so the recipient does not have to reconstruct them.
